 Hardware and Software Operation 

          In the illustration below, you will see the basic computer operation. Data is input into the computer through hardware input devices like a mouse or keyboard. Processing of data occurs internally, through the CPU and RAM, with the use of software installed in the computer. Finally, the output is shown on output devices such as a monitor, printer, or speaker.

          Hardware refers to the mechanical and tangible devices that make up the computer. Computer hardware consists of interconnected electronic devices that we can use to control the computer’s operation, input, and output.

           Software is a set of instructions that enables the computer to do a specific task. It is categorized into three types: system, programming, and application.

 

Types of Software:

 

1. System Software works directly with the hardware. It provides a platform to run an application. It provides and supports user functionality. Examples of system software are operating systems such as Windows, Linux, and Unix.

2. Programming Language/Software provides tools to assist a programmer in writing computer programs and software using different programming languages. The tools include text editors, compilers, interpreters, linkers, debuggers, etc. Examples of programming languages are Cobol, C++, Java, and Visual Basic.

3. Application Software - Application software is designed for users to perform one or more tasks. Application software includes business software, educational software, medical software, databases, and computer game. Examples are Microsoft Office Productivity tool, adobe reader,  Minecraft, and Cabri.
