 Keyboard

          One of the most essential input devices in a computer is a keyboard. It is defined as the set of typewriter-like keys that enables you to enter data into a computer or other devices. Computer keyboards are similar to electric typewriters but contain additional typing keys.

The goal of the QWERTY layout is to make the most common keys the most easily accessible (which is why Q is in the corner).

Function Keys - found in the topmost part of the keyboard. F1 through F12 or F19 keys are used in programs as shortcut keys.

·        F1 - Used as the help key in almost every program. Opens a help screen when this key is pressed.

·        F2  -  In Microsoft Windows, rename a highlighted icon, file, or folder in all versions of Windows; Enter CMOS setup.

·        F3 - Often opens a search feature for many programs, including Microsoft Windows when at the Windows desktop.

·        F4 - Open the address bar in Windows Explorer and Internet Explorer; Repeat the last action performed (Word 2000+); Alt+F4 closes the program window currently active in Microsoft Windows.

·        F5 - In all modern Internet browsers, pressing F5 refreshes or reloads the page or document window; Refresh the list of contents in a folder.

·        F6 - Move the cursor to the address bar in Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, and most other Internet browsers.

·        F7 - Commonly used to spell check and grammar check a document in Microsoft programs such as Microsoft Word, Outlook, etc.

·        F8 - Function key used to enter the Windows startup menu, commonly used to access Windows Safe Mode.

·        F9 - Refresh document in Microsoft Word; Send and receive e-mail in Microsoft Outlook.

·        F10 - In Microsoft Windows, activate the menu bar of an open application; Shift+F10 is the same as right-clicking on a highlighted icon, file, or Internet link.

·        F11 - Enter and exit fullscreen mode in all modern Internet browsers.

·        F12 - open the Save as a window in Microsoft Word; Ctrl+F12 opens a document in Word; Shift+F12 saves the Microsoft Word document (like Ctrl+S); Ctrl+Shift+F12 prints a document in Microsoft Word. 

2. Alphanumeric Keys - The keyboard's primary portion contains letters, numbers, punctuation marks, and some of the symbol keys. It includes:

                    - home row keys consisting of A, S, D, F, G, J, K, L, :, ; and H

                    - top row keys with Q, W, E, R, T, U, I, O, P, and Y

                    - bottom row keys consisting of Z, X, C, V, B, N,  and M

 

3. Numeric Keypad - the keypad gives the user quick access to numbers and math functions such as plus, divide, times, and subtract.

4. Arrow Keys - The arrow keys are four directional keys that allow you to move the cursor or change a highlighted selection

5. Control and toggle keys - give the user additional control over text manipulation and cursor placement. The keys here are:

 · Insert key-  toggles how text is inserted by either inserting the text in front of other text or overwriting text to the right of the cursor as you type.

· Home key—primarily used to return the cursor to the beginning of the line you're currently typing.

· Page up & Down  - used to move the display on a page.

· Num Lock key - key enables and disables the numeric pad.

· Backspace - it removes text to the left of the cursor.

· Delete - removes the character to the left of the cursor, and moves the cursor back one space.

· Enter - sends the cursor to the following line or executes a command or operation.

· Tab - used to insert a tab character or advance the typing cursor to the right by five characters.

· Caps Lock - It causes all letters typed to be in uppercase until disabled.

· Esc - allows the user to abort or cancel an operation.

· Alt - used to press together with another key

· Spacebar - it creates an empty space when pressed


COMMONLY USED SHORTCUT KEYS


1. Copy  Ctrl + C

2. Paste Ctrl + V

3. Cut   Ctrl + X

4. Save  Ctrl + S

5. Undo  Ctrl + Z

6. Redo  ctrl + Y

7. Ctrl+A: Select all

8. Alt+Tab: Switch apps

9. Alt+F4: Close apps

10. Win+D: Show or hide the desktop

11. Ctrl+Esc: Open the Start menu

12. F2: Rename

13. F5: Refresh

14. Win+L: Lock your computer

15. Win+I: Open Settings

16. Win+PrtScn: Save a screenshot

17. Maximize Window: F11 or Windows 18. logo key  + Up arrow 

19. Ctrl+D Bookmark the current page in most Internet browsers.

20. Ctrl+B Change selected text to bold.

Ctrl+I Change selected text to be in italics.

Ctrl+U Change selected text to be underlined.
