Phishing is a fraudulent practice of sending emails claiming to be from reputable companies to persuade individuals to reveal personal information, such as passwords and credit card numbers.

Online scams are a crime where individuals form a scheme that is fraudulent.

Malware, short for malicious software, is a blanket term for viruses, worms, trojans, and other harmful computer programs hackers use to damage computers and gain access to sensitive information.

Hacking, involves trying to access your account or steal personal information from a personal account on the internet.

Everyone must practice privacy and security measures when doing online tasks to avoid these threats. Here are some ways to do it:

Practice safe browsing. Web browsers have built-in security features to help protect your computer.

Check the web address, as some malicious websites use deceptive web addresses.

Check the security symbol, which is a lock symbol on the web address indicating that the web address is using an HTTPS connection and is safe to enter personal information.

Update your web browser regularly, as viruses and malware are created all the time.

Choose a strong password. When creating a password for an online account, use a strong, longer, and difficult-to-guess password that is still easy for you to remember.

Include numbers, symbols, and both uppercase and lowercase letters.

  • Do not use personal information like birthdays.
  • Do not use the same password in all accounts.
  • Use a password generator for a much stronger password.
  • Avoid using words that can be found in the dictionary.

Protect yourself from email spam. Spam is an unwanted email advertisement that clutters your inbox.

Most of the time, these spam emails include malware and phishing scams that can do serious damage to your computer and personal email account.

Avoid malware. Protect your computer by using antivirus and anti-malware software like Bitdefender, which blocks malware from being installed and removes it if it gets into the computer.

Keep the browser, operating system, and programs updated to protect the computer.
Back up your files to avoid deletion or corruption from malware.

Purchase online from secured sites. Make sure that the sites you access are secured by looking at the lock symbol on the web address and providing only the necessary information when using a credit card or bank account online. Keep a record of the transactions you made.

Be careful about what you post. Avoid posting too much, particularly on social media, where people sometimes forget that their personal information and property have already been posted, and can be a reason for thieves to target them.

Sensitive and daring pictures can be used to attract online predators.

Keep privacy settings on. Adjust the privacy settings in any account online to keep your account safe.
