Time Zones Explained


There are a total of 24 distinct time zones around the world, each spanning approximately 15° of longitude. This is due to the Earth's rotation, which completes a full 360° rotation in 24 hours.

The initial time zone, known as the Prime Meridian or Greenwich Meridian, is centered at 0° longitude. It extends from 7.5°W to 7.5°E. Moving eastward, each subsequent time zone covers a range of 15° of longitude, such as 7.5°E to 22.5°E for the next time zone.

Adding and Losing Time


When traveling towards the right or east, you are said to be gaining time because you add one hour for every time zone you cross. However, moving towards the left or west results in losing an hour for every time zone you pass through, resulting in slow time.

To determine the local time of a specific location, you can calculate its distance in degrees of longitude from the Prime Meridian, which serves as the reference point for time zones. For instance, if it is 12:00 pm at the Prime Meridian, it would be 4:00 pm at 60°E longitude. On the other hand, if the location is 60°W longitude, it would be 8:00 am.


Asia has 11 different time zones, and the Philippines is located in the UTC (GMT) +8 time zone.

Therefore, as a service provider in this industry, it is crucial to be familiar with the time zones used in the United States. The United States uses nine standard time zones from east to west: Atlantic Standard Time (AST)

Eastern Standard Time (EST),

Central Standard Time (CST)

Mountain Standard Time (MST)

Pacific Standard Time (PST)

Alaskan Standard Time (AKST)

Hawaii-Aleutian Standard Time (HST)

Samoa Standard Time (UTC-11)

Chamorro Standard Time (UTC+10).




It is important to note that the names in each time zone change during Daylight Saving Time, with Eastern Standard Time (EST) becoming Eastern Daylight Time (EDT), and so forth. However, some areas like Arizona, Puerto Rico, Hawaii, U.S. Virgin Islands, and American Samoa do not observe Daylight Saving Time.


Daylight Saving Time


Daylight Saving Time (DST) is when we set our clocks ahead by one hour in the spring and back by one hour in the fall. This happens in most parts of the United States. We do this to make better use of the daylight in the summer months when the days are longer. We start DST on the second Sunday of March at 2:00 a.m. and end it on the first Sunday of November, when we go back to our regular time.
